SCHOOL NEWS:

HEAD LICE: The school has cases of head lice at both school locations and we will be checking students weekly. The following is the School’s policy on Head Lice: Upon detection of nits (lice eggs) or lice on a student, the parent will be notified. We will NOT send students home or isolate them. There has been lots of misleading information on head lice in the past and lots of un-warranted concern about them. Almost to point of hysteria! (Please check the following website for great info. on head lice - http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/headlice.html
This all said, Stillwater Montessori School needs to eliminate this nuisance problem and to do so needs cooperation from all parents. If notified, please treat your child. Please do the best you can to remove all nits and lice. Follow treatment procedures carefully and completely. We will continue to check weekly and continue to notify parents as needed, if nits or lice are found. All parents should keep an eye on their child(ren) and check them regularly, especially if any head scratching is noticed. Together, we can put this nuisance behind us. “Nit-picking” will have a whole new meaning if you have done it! Thanks for your support and help in this!

ENVIRONMENTAL CLUB: Our first meeting will be on Thursday, October 3rd at the Page Farm Museum at UMaine at 3:30 p.m. This after-school program continues last years success. It is to promote environmental awareness in a fun “hands-on” way. It is open to students K-8 on a first come basis and club size is limited. Please sign-up if you are interested in participating. Joanne Alex will be the club leader, assisted by parent and University Science professor Mary Bird, Aaron Padgen and 2 University students.

PARENT-TEACHER FORUM: This forum will meet the 1st Friday of every month and explore a topic of interest, including presentations and discussion. The first one is Friday, October 4th at 6:30 p.m. at Holy Family Parish. Topic will be: “Parent Strategies for Tough Times: Limit Setting, Power Struggles, Tantrums and Negativity.” Joanne Alex will be the facilitator for this session. Please sign up to attend. Note: Child care is available if needed.

EXPLORING JAPAN: Our 1st after-school Culture club meeting will be on Thursday, October 10th from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Holy Family Parish. This program is hosted by Stillwater Montessori School and in conjunction with the UMaine International Office’s Global Links Program. It is sponsored by the River Coalition, Inc. Itsuka Yokoea who is working at our school and 3 other Japanese students from the University of Maine will present a fun informative program that explores Japanese culture, its food, music, clothing and arts. There will be some “hands-on” activities. It is open to the public for all area K–8 students. Please sign up if you plan to have your students attend so we can plan appropriately.

SCHOOL PHOTOS: Please check your folders for the photo order forms. School pictures will be taken the morning of October 16th by MacLean-Steven Studios, Inc. We promise to get classroom composites included this time. We will also schedule a separate classroom group photo in the Spring. Please return your photo order & money NLT Oct. 16th. There will be a make-up scheduled.

FUNDRAISING: One easy way for Stillwater Montessori School to raise some money is if parents would drop off returnable bottles to Skeeters Redemption Center on Stillwater Ave. The School has an account there. Just say you are donating to Stillwater Montessori and they will credit our account! All funds will be used for student activities such as class field trips.

LATE CHILD PICK-UP: Please pick your child up ON TIME. Last pick-up time is 4:30 p.m. Otherwise a $15 late fee will be assigned. It is not considerate to the school’s staff and especially to your child to be late without notification. Please call if you have to be late for any reason. Thanks.

COMPUTER SUPPORT GROUP: This group recently met and reviewed the schools computers and website. All newsletters will now be emailed and also posted on the School’s website (www.stillwatermontessori.org) There may also be a chat-room / bulletin board option set-up if there is support and use for it. We appreciate your feedback as we seek to improve our technical educational support. A Reminder: We continually look to upgrade our computers and if your office or Dept. is getting new computers, we might be able to use your old ones. Please see Joe Alex or Dennis Coyne about any donations of hardware or software. Thanks.

NEW STUDENTS: There are several new students to Stillwater Montessori School and we will be posting revised classroom rosters in the near future.

CONSOLIDATED SCHOOL: As many of you know, we are looking to consolidate our programs under one roof and are looking to lease the Herbert Sargent School in Stillwater from the Old Town School Dept. The OT School Board will be making a decision on it on Oct. 22nd at 7:00 p.m. at their meeting at the Leonard Middle School. This is important to us and the school greatly appreciates your support and suggestions. It is open to the public and hopefully we can have as many supportive parents as we can attend that evening. There will be a sign-up.

PEACE THROUGH UNDERSTANDING: FAMILY CULTURE NIGHT: This will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 22nd at the Old Town Public Library from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. (Unfortunately at the same time as the OT School Board meeting) This event is co-sponsored with CISV (Children’s International Summer Village and UM Global Links. It will be a fun evening of cultural exchange and food and music. Plan on attending. There will be a sign-up for this family event!

LOWER ELEMENTARY CLASS:(Al Duplessis)
The Lower Elementary group has been working on a study unit on simple plants. We have “dissected” a fern plant to find all its parts. We saw plant cells from the samples that the children prepared. The first trip this past Thursday 11:00 a.m. to the Music Dept. at UM was a great success! For the next eight weeks college music education majors work together and individually teaching music to our students! It is a really fun educational experience for all involved!

UPPER ELEMENTARY & MIDDLE SCHOOL CLASS: (Irene Jackson)
Thanks to the many chaperones who helped with our Common Ground Fair trip! Students learned unexpected things -- like how to walk on stilts and how to make dolls out of wooden spools. We had a lot of fun. Students began French and Music this week. We have also been continuing with weekly folk dancing and art. Parent help is requested for another field trip scheduled for Monday, October 7 to Peacemeal Farm in Dixmont. Middle school students have been invited to participate in a work experience for the day. The upper elementary will visit for a tour of the farm in the morning. If you are interested in joining us, please talk to Irene. Thanks again for all your contributions and thanks especially to Dennis Coyne for his help with the computers.

PRIMARY CLASSROOMS: (Joanne Alex and Marion Young-Talon)
Both primary classrooms will be studying fire safety next week. The extended day students (Joanne’s afternoon group) will be studying habitats and preparing for their field trips with the University Science Education students on Oct. 21st and 22nd. Please be aware of colder weather and dress your children appropriately. Jackets and sweaters /sweatshirts should be available. Remember to sign up for group snack at least once a month. Thanks for all your great support!
