PRIMARY NEWS
Joanne’s Primary Class: We have been busy learning everyone’s name and I have been impressed with how quickly we are becoming a community of friends. This week along with our name games and “How do you do” game, we have made a class set of photos. This week we will be introduced to “I Care Cat” who helps us with rules for a peaceful classroom. I Care Cat’s rules are: 1.) We listen to each other. 2.) Hands are for helping not hurting. 3.) We use “I care” language. 4.) We care about each others feelings. 5.) We are responsible for what we say and do. The class has been waiting for our painted lady caterpillars to arrive so we can watch the caterpillar to chrysalis to butterfly cycle unfold.. IF ANYONE FINDS ANY MONACH BUTTERFLIES OR THEIR CATERPLILLARS (big, green with black stripes on milkweed plants) PLEASE BRING THEM IN TO SHARE! We will also be doing lots of Nature Study with trees and apples as our focus. We have been using our individual snack area, which the students really enjoy during worktime. It has been a great start to the year. Next week we are starting with all our special instruction. Also UM Conley Speech and hearing Center will be starting to work with our students. Please ask if you have any questions. - Joanne

Joanne’s Extended Day Class: The older students in extended day are likewise off to a great start! They are very eager to work in the classroom. They will chose and take home their first book to share with parents this week. Please remember to return the book the following Monday so someone else can use it! For everyone’s sake this is important! After lunch we have been reading “Charlotte’s Web” by E.B. White. We will be talking about Eric Carle and his books, especially his art work. We will be learning about the forest habitat, esp. about the world beneath our feet. We hae gotten an Ant Farm and look forward to setting it up and watching it! We also plan to start a worm bucket. Parents are welcome any time to visit! - Joanne

Marion’s Primary 2 Class: Welcome to our classroom. It has been such a delight to finally put faces to the names. The children are all ready to go exploring the classroom and making new friends. We have been talking about the fundamentals for the classroom such as using the variety of work spaces, how to choose work and knowing where certain things are. (i.e. cubbies, work drawers, bathroom, etc.) We are getting to know one another through playing games and doing projects. We will be talking about three units of study: Apples, Trees and Butterflies. There will be many activites and hands on experiences for everyone. The units of study will changes every 3-4 weeks. The daily schedule is posted outside the classroom door. Please ask if there are any questions. Thank you for returning the take-home bags each week and remembering to sign-up for snack on the School bulletin board.

ELEMENTARY NEWS
PARENTS NOTE: The School recently procured a playground structure( Finally!!) and it is a big success but there are some rules for its use to insure that all are safe. We want you to know what these are so everyone ( Staff, Parents and Students ) are clear on them. These are posted on the bulletin board and placed in your parent folders. Future plans include setting up a Tetherball pole and replacing the Big “Toy Box” with a storage shed. Does anyone know of one that might be donated ?? We are looking for a small plastic, metal or wooden shed with a door that can be locked. Let Joe know! Thanks.

AL’s Lower Elementary Class: We are back in the swing of things as the school year is getting started. The Friendship unit is started. We want to explain the rules of the class and start to develop the friendships that will last beyond the year. The next unit we will be studying will be a forest unit. We will be going to the demonstration forest to review the work we have done in the past two years and to identify some of the trees in the area. We have started a couple of bird feeding stations outside the classroom to attract as many types of birds as we can. We will be keeping a chart to identify the birds that winter over in our area.
Look for the letter in your box that explains the snack fund that we have used to buy snack items for the classroom. The first month’s contribution is due by September 5th.
Its great to back.
– Al

Irene’s Upper Elementary Class: A wonderful start to the year with the students trying out the new materials, working well together and having interesting discussions. We will be taking at least two field trips this fall, one to Acadia for a geology tour about “Fire & Ice” and one to a bog to do climate research sampling. Dates will be announced. Students have begun studying about climate and climate change. Their first project will be to do a weather report from a planet in our solar system! It feels great to welcome our new class members and also our returning class members and have everyboady learning!
