These toys go to the less fortunate children in the community. We at the same time will be collecting food this project. There will be a box at both sites in which you may drop them off. We have filled our box a couple times so far. Thanks! We will need to have all donations in NO later than December 13th, so that they can be distributed before the Holidays. Catherine DesPrez (Pieter’s Mom) will be delivering the food and the toys to Manna for the Christmas season. Thank you, Catherine.

Special thanks to Mary Bird for organizing the recent Nutcracker Party at Page Farm followed by the show at MCA. It was a really fun time! PRIMARY NEWS:
JOANNE’S CLASSROOM:
We are enjoying our latest unit “Holidays Around the World”. It has been fun to see how people around the world celebrate different customs and traditions. We have traveled to Norway with Kathrina’s Grammie, Anita and made woven heart baskets, we’ve been to Israel with Tom and his mom Leigh and heard about Hanukkah. We made candle hats and learned the candle dance. We explored Germany and the Nutcracker as well as counting the days until Christmas (Advent Calendars). We learned about St. Nicholas in the Netherlands and Belgium and Pere Noel (France). This week we learned about Italy and Befana -The Christmas Witch, Kwanzaa (African American) and St. Lucia Day (Sweden). Next week, Lydia and her mom (Susan) will share England’s traditions with us. Shira and her mom (Sandra) will also share B’Hai holiday Ayyami-Ha with us. Pieter’s mom Catherine, will take us to Mexico and we will visit Russia with Allyeshka and his mom Laura. We continue to learn many new things. Thank you all for contributing to our class with your time, snacks and resources-we’ve all benefited!! After the holidays, we will explore the Arctic, Antarctica and animals in winter. - Joanne
Extended Day: We have been reading Pippi Longstocking (Sweden) and enjoying her antics. We have continued in depth many of the morning projects as we continue to work on our reading, writing and math. If you have questions please ask. Important Reminder: Please return ALL Readers to school before Vacation! Thanks!

When we return from vacation we will be studying snow, animals in winter, the Arctic and Antarctic. PLEASE remember to also bring take home bags back to school by Thursday, Dec. 19th , it really helps the teachers out if you can return these bags. - Marion

Tiffany (our student teacher) has sponsored a trip to the YMCA pool for this Thursday, Dec. 12th from 1-2 p.m. Transportation is all set, however, we need permission slips signed and students need to bring swimming suit and towel.
UPPER ELEMENTARY / MIDDLE SCHOOL (Irene Jackson)
The class has recently visited the Old Town canoe factory and the Veazie Hydro-electric power plant. These are in conjunction with their study unit on industry. They were lots of fun and informative. The students will design and build their own vehicles / machines using the recently purchased LINX building kit. The funds used for this kit were provided by the parent curriculum fundraising effort. Thank you very much! Both Al and Irene’s classrooms will use this kit. Next week , Peter Zak of the Maine Energy Education Program (MEEP) will be instructing students at the Elementary location to become members of an Energy Patrol, checking the energy efficiency of our school. Lots of great learning going on!!
