Soil Unit
Nash Allan-Rahill

The upper elementary students at the Stillwater Montessori School are studying food and farming for their unit. As part of this, they did a unit on soil.  They learned about mushrooms and fungi, soil organisms, and soil quality.
They went on a mushroom walk with Alma Homola, from the University of Maine, on the Orono bike trails on September 7th. They saw a lobster mushroom and puff ball mushrooms. They also went on a fungi field trip to the Rogers Farm on September 27th. Dr. Seanna Annis showed them fungal diseases on plants.
They collected soil cores around the Stillwater Montessori School. Then they tested the soils for phosphorus, nitrogen, pH, and potassium.
